Each child has a different core skills set, and through supporting their learning these skills can be extended. This process is called mediated learning and was developed by Reuven Feuerstein. Feuerstein was a cognitive psychologist who believed that intelligence is modifiable if students are emotionally secure, have an appropriate learning opportunity and someone to create a quality intervention to develop their cognitive skills.
Cognitive Abilities Profile (CAP) is one way in which these core skills can be examined. It provides a snapshot of a child’s skills, however through discussion with family members, and school staff (if required) they can give a well rounded view of both your child’s strengths and the areas that they would benefit from developing. The initial assessment takes around an hour and a half and comprises a series of games and activities that are tailored to the individual student. Reviews can be arranged, and experience shows that where children and their school have taken on board those strategies that they have made significant progress.
Other assessments may be used in line with the UK education system to support one to one work that I carry out. Where I use these methods they will simply be to assess your child’s progress and identify the next steps that we need to take
